Badlands NP was the first national park I visited in the United States so I was pretty excited about an opportunity to do a mini hike there. Our group had a choice of a few different routes but I went with the short Notch Trail.

The Chicago Lakefront Trail is a paradise for active people. Popular with cyclists and joggers, the 18-mile course runs alongside the shores of Lake Michigan and is a fantastic way to experience some of the Windy City’s highlights. I cycled it on my recent trip (twice, no less!)

The sun was still hiding behind the sandstone cliffs which rose, like giant monoliths, on both sides of the road snaking through the canyon. Cottonwood trees, junipers and wildflowers perched along the banks of the Virgin River, which twisted through the gorge.
