There are loads of reasons to visit South Korea and its delicious food is definitely up there. Having evolved over the centuries, today it’s one of the most popular cuisines in the world and for good reason. Going on an impromptu food adventure around the country’s many markets, restaurants and street stalls is a great way to explore this corner of Asia.
One of my favourite places in Busan is the stunning Beomeosa Temple. Sitting on the edge of the sacred Geumjeongsan Mountain, it’s one of the most important temples in this part of the country and is also the head temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism.
One of the most fascinating places I got to visit in my time in South Korea was Gosu Cave, a huge limestone cave near Danyang. Formed tens of millions of years ago, this natural wonder offered a unique glimpse into a mystical underground world.
Hiking in Sobaeksan National Park unexpectedly turned out to be one of the highlights of my trip to South Korea. While it’s the country’s third largest national park, it lies away from the main tourist trails making it trickier to get to.
Nusa Penida island, a short hop away from mainland Bali, can still just about be considered a “hidden gem” .On one hand it’s a blessing. It provides a slice of (almost) unspoilt wilderness with lush forests, beautiful beaches and gorgeous vistas.
Yogyakarta, or Jogja as it’s lovingly known is one of the most fascinating cities in Indonesia. This bustling university town is also the cultural heart of the country attracting artists and bright minds from across the land. Its proximity to some of Java’s most famous sights makes it a great base to explore the island from.
With two Java volcano hikes already in the bag, it was time for possibly the most impressive of them all. Visiting the Kawah Ijen (Ijen Crater) to see the volcano’s mesmerising blue flames was a massive highlight of my Indonesia trip.
Most travellers will only be familiar with Banyuwangi for two reasons. It’s often either the first or last stop on an overland trip through Java (depending on whether you are heading to or from Bali). It’s also a great access point for exploring the Kawah Ijen volcano.
Mount Bromo is one of Java’s most famous attractions and one of over 40 active volcanos on the island. Its setting among the stunning landscapes of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park makes it a popular tourist destination. Visiting Mount Bromo should be high on any East Java itinerary and I’ve put together this guide to help make your trip as smooth as possible.
