Our first stop, after spending a day or so in capi

Our first stop, after spending a day or so in capital San Jose, was on Costa Rica's Caribbean coast. We headed to a small town of Cahuita, which serves as the gateway to a national park of the same name. It's one of the country's smallest national parks but that makes it very easy to explore.

~

The park sits right next to the town and the single hiking trail meanders through the rainforest and via many white sand beaches and provides loads of opportunities to spot wildlife.

~

We spotted howler monkeys, raccoons, many different bird species but the highlight was an encounter with the white-faced capuchin monkeys which we observed for a while playing, grooming and jumping about! It was a wonderful introduction to Costa Rican wildlife!

What springs to mind when you think of a hostel? Messy dorm rooms and shared bathrooms or a sense of community and newfound friendships?

~

For me it's undoubtedly the latter, having stayed in hostels all over the world in the last 10 years, as travel became a huge part of my life. Some of my closest friends to this day are people I met in hostels or through their tours or recommendations. My fondest memories are not necessarily of temples, beaches and museums, but of people that I shared the experiences with.

~

I'd like to think I know a good hostel when I see (well, stay in) one. We spent our first couple of nights in Costa Rica in Selina San Jose and it was a pretty cool way to start our trip. The facilities were excellent, the food pretty exceptional by hostel standards (not that many hostels even have their own restaurant/bar on sight) and the staff attentive.

~

We really enjoyed the daily Welcome Drink that brought travellers together and various activities, such as a traditional cooking class by the awesome experience manager, Sofia.

~

Oh and an old VW as a reception desk? 😍

Taking in the view of Volcán Arenal, one of Costa Rica's many incredible sights that we've had a chance to explore over the last couple of weeks.

~

Arenal was dormant for centuries until a sudden eruption in 1968 wiped out a nearby town and kickstarted decades of activity. In 2010, almost as suddenly as it started erupting, it ceased activity and has been dormant since.

~

It's an incredible place and is part of Parque Nacional Volcán Arenal. We visited the national park and explored the trails as well as spent time at viewpoints like this one.

As you've probably gathered from my stories, I've been in Mauritius for about 10 days now. We came here to attend our friends' wedding, but always planned to extend the trip and see what the island has to offer. We have not been dissappointed. With its unique culture, warm climate and stunning landscapes, Mauritius has been an absolute delight.

Here's our local public beach - less than 200 metres from our AirBnB. We probably haven't spent as much time here as we should have - what with exploring the island, hiking, gym and running - but this is definitely our special spot!

No visit to Vancouver is complete without spending

No visit to Vancouver is complete without spending at Granville Island. Home to more than 300 businesses, it's the city's artistic and cultural hub and is well worth spending a few hours exploring.

~

The highlight is, of course. Granville Island Public Market. Featuring everything from pad thai to pierogis, this is a foodies' paradise, with over 50 food shops and dining options. We came here on two separate days, trying some of the great local produce and enjoying the views of the city despite the incessant rain.

~

There is a lot more to Granville Island though. From independent book shops to art galleries and even a blacksmith, exploring every nook and cranny of the island is highly recommended. There is even a brewery, featuring delicious, locally crafted beer!

Just a few days after returning from Spain, it was onto the next trip - Canada!! From glorious Andalucia sunshine to...well...incessant rain of Vancouver, BC!

~

We started our western Canada adventure by exploring a very wet Vancouver. Stanley Park is one of the city's highlights and a favourite among locals and tourists alike.

~

I loved this spot overlooking the Lions Gate Bridge with the replica figurehead of the SS Empress of Japan which carried out hundreds of crossings between Vancouver and the Orient.

One of the highlights of my trip to Spain on Octob

One of the highlights of my trip to Spain on October 2021 was a hike to Mulhacén peak in the Sierra Nevada mountain range in Andalucia. At 3,479 metres (11,414ft) it's the highest point not only in continental Spain but also of the whole Iberian peninsula.

~

While not a tecnnical route, it was one of the most challenging day hikes I've done in a long time. It took me 7.5 hours to cover the 28km out-and-back route and the mixture of warm sunshine and the altitude definitely made it tougher going, especially with a gruelling final zig-zag ascent up a steep slope.

~

The reward is some incredible views of this otherworldly landscape as well as an opportunity to, at least for a short while, be on top of the world (ok, just mainland Spain!)

~

The logistics of doing this hike in one day can be quite complicated so I will definitely write a blog post on this at some point! I rented a car and had a VERY early start from Granada.

~

All in all, it was an incredible day and a memorable way to cap off a fantastic time in Spain!

Another must-visit area around the Alhambra is the Generalife, a palace and gardens which date back to the 14th century and were the summer retreat of the ruling sultans at the time.

~

Approaching the estate from the Alhambra, you'll pass through beautifully landscaped gardens complete with water features, patios and colourful flowers. Once you reach the Palacio del Generalife, you can explore peaceful courtyards like Patio de la Acequia with its water features.

~

Generalife is also a great place for views of the Alhambra as well as Granada and the Albaycín quarter. It doesn't tend to get as many visitors as the Alhambra but it's still worth getting here early, to enjoy the peace and tranquility of the spot

No trip Granada is complete without a visit to the Alhambra - one of the finest and most important examples of Islamic architecture in Europe and Spain's second most visited tourist attraction.

~

The Alhambra complex is best known for the stunning palaces and gardens that were constructed in the 14th century but a castle has been known to exist in this location from as far back as 900.

~

It's a sprawling site and there is a lot to see and do on your visit. It's important to book ahead as entrance to centrepiece Palacios Nazaríes (where photos in this post are from) is limited to a small number of visitors every 30 minutes.

~

From the Patio de los Arrayanes (Courtyard of the Myrtles) and its rectangular pool to the stunning Patio de los Leones with its beautiful fountained guarded by 12 lion statues, the palace is an incredible and peaceful place to wander through. Don't forget to look up too - the walls and the ceilings of many rooms are decorated with carvings, frescoes and tiles.

The classic view of The Alhambra from Mirador San

The classic view of The Alhambra from Mirador San Nicolás might be well-known but it's still a fascinating place for people (and of course sunset) watching. Located in the Albayzín quarter, the climb up steep cobbled streets will get your heart going but there are buses that ply the tight streets of the district

~

There are a number of other lookouts in the area and it's always worth checking local cafes and restaurants some of which offer a stunning view with your meal too.

One of the main reasons I wanted to visit Córdoba

One of the main reasons I wanted to visit Córdoba and, undoubtedly, one of the city's highlights is the Mezquita-Catedral.

~

It really us unlike any site I've ever been to. A mosque originally built in the 8th century and then enlarged and added to over time, it's one of the most important examples of Islamic art and architecture.

~

What makes it incredible though is the fact that it has a Christian cathedral right in the middle of. This was added in the 16th century. It's fascinating and exploring the building is a must for any visitor

~

Don't miss the stunning mihrab prayer niche, the Gothic/Renaissance cathedral and of course the incredible stripes terracotta arches that are the defining feature of this incredible place!
